FAQs

What are Cane Toads and Cuban Tree Frogs?

Cane Toads (Rhinella marina) and Cuban Tree Frogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis) are both non-native, invasive species in Florida. Cane Toads were introduced to control agricultural pests, while Cuban Tree Frogs likely entered through the pet trade. Both species pose a significant threat to local wildlife and ecosystems, as well as the safety of pets.

Why are Cane Toads and Cuban Tree Frogs a problem?

Both species lack natural predators in Florida, allowing their populations to grow uncontrollably. Cane Toads secrete a powerful toxin, bufotoxin, which can be deadly to pets, wildlife, and even humans in some cases. Cuban Tree Frogs are highly territorial and prey on smaller amphibians, disrupting local food webs and causing harm to native species.

How dangerous are Cane Toads and Cuban Tree Frogs to pets?

Cane Toads are particularly dangerous to pets. Their bufotoxin can cause severe symptoms like vomiting, drooling, seizures, and even death if ingested or licked. Cuban Tree Frogs can also be a hazard but are less toxic; however, they still pose a risk to pets due to their aggressive nature and the secretion of a slimy substance that can cause skin irritation.

How do I know if I have Cane Toads or Cuban Tree Frogs on my property?

Both species are most active at night. Cane Toads are large (up to 9 inches), with dry, warty skin and a light-colored stripe down their backs. Cuban Tree Frogs are smaller (about 4 inches) and have smooth, glossy skin that can range in color from green to brown. If you're unsure, we can help identify them and assess the situation.

How can I protect my pets from these invasive species?

  • Supervise pets: Keep pets indoors at night when Cane Toads and Cuban Tree Frogs are most active.

  • Barriers: Use fences or barriers around water sources, as these amphibians are often found near ponds or wet areas.

  • Avoid touching: If you see one of these species, avoid handling them without gloves, especially the Cane Toad, due to the toxin.

What do I do if I find a cane toad in my yard?

Don’t panic! First, try to secure the toad under a heavy bowl or flower pot. Don’t use a box or anything with pliable sides - cane toads are incredibly strong and can flatten their bodies to make escape possible. Next, give us a call or send a text with a photo of the toad. Try to take an unobstructed photo looking straight down at the toad (top of the head) or a profile view). Someone will respond to you as soon as possible with an identification and schedule a visit. Please note that payment must be made before a technician can be dispatched.
